Numerologists believe that everything in the universe vibrates at a subatomic level, meaning that everything in constant swirling, ebbing, interconnected motion. (Try not to get motion sickness!) According to numerology, everything vibrates with its own frequency—yes, numbers and letters included. They each possess their own unique vibration. This means that every word, number, and date is like a code that you can break to learn more about your traits, strengths, and purpose in life.
What's a life path number, anyway? One of the most important numbers is your life path number. It comes from your date of birth, and it reveals the person you're going to become and the purpose you're here to fulfill. NBD! Some numerologists believe that your life path number will keep on being served to your future reincarnations until you complete your lesson and serve your purpose. Then, you can then move on to the next number!
Your life path number might not always resonate when you first read about them. Remember that life is long, and you might take many twists and turns before finally hitting upon your true purpose.
How to find your life path numberTo find your life path number, simply add together the digits of your full birthdate until you reach a single-digit number, excluding 11 and 22 and 33, which are considered master numbers (we'll return to them). This single digit is your individual life path number.
Let's say your birthday is May 11, 1994. To calculate your life path number, you reduce each component of this date to a single digit:
The date, 11, is reduced to 1+ 1 = 2.
The month, 05, is reduced to 0 + 5 = 5.
The year, 1994, is reduced to 1 + 9 + 9 + 4. This equals 23. Then, 23 is reduced to 2 + 3 = 5.
Then, we add the reduced month, date, and year numbers: 2 + 5 + 5 = 12.
And then finally, we reduce it again: 1 + 2 = 3.
In this case, your life path number is 3.

Is Your Personality Number Just A Number? The Truth Behind First Impressions
In numerology, your Personality Number is described as the outer image you project to the world - that first impression people have of you. It is the features and behavior others observe about you before they get to your inner self. It might not be a comprehensive picture of your true nature, but it significantly affects how others see you socially and professionally. In that sense, its a lot like your ascendant or even your midheaven sign, astrologically speaking. All of it has to do with the public sphere.First of all, it is important to calculate your Personality Number. To calculate it, use the consonants of your full birth name. You take each consonant of your full birth name, add to it the letter-number translation guide of numerology: B = 2, C = 3, D = 4, E = 5 and so on. Then you add the numbers of the consonants together, and reduce a single digit or master number with a two-digit number such as 11 or 22, which are also considered as master numbers.Your Personality Number is your filter and can give an instant impression of you to others. This effects how you present yourself and the energy you enter the room with, and in what manner other people are likely to treat you. For instance, a Personality Number of 1 tells you that confidence, independence, and a strong will are how others appear to view you; with a 3, for example, it may be that you appear creative, outgoing, or even charismatic. Now that you know your Personality Number, you can apply it to figuring out how to get better at socialising. In his essay for The New York Times, Tim Kreider said, 'if we want the rewards of being loved we have to submit to the mortifying ordeal of being known.' It rings true to this day, as your fear of perception is the most daunting part of getting to know a new person no matter who you may be.Knowing how to adjust your outer image to gain personal or professional goals, why people act toward you in certain ways, and how to balance the external persona against your inner self will aid and benefit you in the longer run, which is why calculating and understanding your Personality Number is so important. In this regard, the number will have a window on how you see the world and empower you to improve how you interact with the world. How To Calculate Your Numerology Compatibility And Find Your Best Match
If you're the type of person who always checks your astrological compatibility when you're dating someone new, chances are you're a firm believer in all things astrology and spirituality, especially as it relates to relationships and personalities. Not every astrological compatibility is accurate, though, and sometimes it can be difficult to gather all the information you need to see if the stars are positioned in your favor when it comes to a new relationship. That's where numerology compatibility comes in. Some people just don't know their birth time and without that, it's basically impossible to calculate their Big 3 (rising, moon, and sun signs) and test your relationship compatibility. With numerology, though, you can put your potential relationship match to the test without knowing anything about the other person's zodiac signs. For the uninitiated, numerology is "a system with origins in ancient civilizations like Babylon, Egypt, China, and India," says Ryan Marquardt, professional astrologer and tarot card reader. Marquardt continues, "People saw patterns in numbers and began to associate them with different symbolic meanings." In a nutshell, numerology examines the significance of numbers! The meaning of these numbers is determined by intent and encompasses self-discovery, decision-making, making predictions, and romantic compatibility, Marquardt adds.
Like astrological compatibility, numerology compatibility goes deep and takes into account several different aspects of an individual. So for a personalized compatibility analysis, booking a session with a numerologist would be your best bet. According to professional numerologist and author Novalee Wilder, however, there is a super simplified way to calculate your numerology compatibility yourself—all you need is the other person's birthdate. Oh, and the instructions from Wilder and Marquardt below.

What is numerology compatibility?Numerology compatibility is exactly what it sounds like—the compatibility of your number. There are many different numbers in numerology, from your Destiny Number to your Soul Number, but the one we're focusing on is your Life Path number, aka your base number. "This number influences your personality, life lessons, gifts, and challenges," Wilder says. "It also influences who you're attracted to in friendships, romantically, or work well with." Think of it as the sun sign of numerology.
Similar to zodiac compatibility, numerology compatibility pairs two Life Path numbers together and calculates their alignments. Marquardt says the meaning of these alignments will lend insight into your relationship needs and desires and to those of your partner, as well as the strengths and weaknesses you might face in your relationship. Keep in mind that numerology, like astrology, is never absolute. "As with any tool like numerology, you don't want to judge someone else just because they have a certain Life Path number," Marquardt adds. Don't worry if your Life Path number doesn't mesh well with your partner's. The relationship is. Not. Doomed. Okay?
Can numerology predict compatibility?"Numerology can predict compatibility, but it's fairly complex and never guaranteed because people change and compatibility is fluid," Marquardt explains. "Your first year with someone might feel magnetic, but as you each grow and change, you might realize the compatible forces that initially brought you together are no longer present, or maybe your values have shifted somehow and you need a different form of compatibility." Numerology—like astrology—is not absolute nor definite. We are all works in progress, so while you and your SO might have been 100 percent in sync at the beginning of your relationship, things change and life happens.
How to find your numbers for compatibility"There are a variety of numbers and calculations that are important in numerology, but knowing your life path number is the most fundamental way to better learn about yourself and determine your compatibility with someone else," Marquardt explains. You can calculate your life path number manually (more on this later) or let a website do it for you. According to Marquardt, after you find your life path number, you can go ahead and locate more numbers like your destiny number, soul urge number, birthday number, karmic debt number, and personal year number. He adds that while life path numbers are traditionally used to compare compatibility, your destiny number—along with your other core numbers like your soul urge or expression number in your numerology chart—can also offer insight into any compatible traits and challenges.
"You have to understand yourself and the person you're checking compatibility with, and from there, you decide if the dynamic will work for you or not." —Ryan Marquardt, professional astrologer and tarot card reader
Now that you've passed Numerology 101, let's find your number—all you need is your birth date. "The digits for your day, month, and year should be added up until you get a single-digit number (1 through 9), which is often called a base number," Marquardt explains. "The only numbers that should not be reduced any further are 11, 22, and 33, which are considered to be master numbers and hold special significance." For example, if your birthday is July 13, 2000, or 07/13/2000, your calculation will look like this: 7 + 1 + 3 + 2 + 0 + 0 +0 +0 = 13. From there, you'll keep adding the numbers until you get a single digit: 4. So, your Life Path number (or base number) would be 4.
Still confused? Wilder uses a different method. Base numbers range from 1–9, so if you were born on one of those days of the month, that is your base number. If you were born on a double-digit date, simply add up both numbers. For instance, those born on the 24th of the month will add 2+4 to get their base number, which is 6. The results of these two different methods may vary wildly, so it's up to you which method you feel most drawn to and which produces the results that resonate the most with you.
How do you check your compatibility in numerology?Technically, there's no such thing as "incompatibility" in numerology. All base numbers are compatible with one another—how well they match is a different story. Additionally, compatibility is a personal preference, says Marquardt. "You have to understand yourself and the person you're checking compatibility with, and from there, you decide if the dynamic will work for you or not," he adds.
That said, there are some general rules of thumb when it comes to checking numerology compatibility. First, according to Marquardt, all base numbers are compatible with themselves. Second, even numbers typically vibe better with one another and the same goes for odd numbers. Wilder seconds this, adding that opposite base numbers naturally gravitate toward one another. However, numerology is never black and white. Wilder notes that many numerology compatibility combinations will work in all types of relationships, including friendships, romantic relationships, and work relationships.
What numbers are compatible?Marquardt warns that numerology compatibility is complex, noting that it's never black or white and that there's no such thing as having fundamentally incompatible numbers. "In a modern relationship, it's healthy to keep in mind that all numbers have different compatibility factors with each other," he says. "Rather than looking at two numbers and deeming them good or bad together, it's about grasping the inherent strengths and weaknesses those two numbers might encounter together."
That said, some numbers traditionally do ~vibe~ better with others. Keep reading to know which numbers mesh well and which ones have a weaker connection.
Number 1 and Numbers 1, 2, and 5This base number is uber-compatible with itself, 2s, and 5s. Number 1s are confident, hard-working, and natural leaders. While number 1 works well with itself and 5s, it matches best with 2s. This is because "number 2 can create space for number 1 and show them the benefits of a long-term partnership," says Marquardt. "Number 2 can also provide stability and support to balance out number 1's more eccentric and spontaneous tendencies."
Number 2 and Numbers 2, 4, 6, 8, and 9For base number 2, they're often attracted to 1, 2, 7, 8, and 9, and make great romantic partners with 4 and 9, in particular. Wilder cautions this base number to be careful not to fall in love too quickly as "they can tend to drown in other people's emotional life."
Number 3 and Numbers 3, 6, and 9Okay, this base number is compatible with almost everyone, though Marquart notes that 3s traditionally have better relationships with other 3s, 6s, and 9s. The main reason why 3s get along with almost every number is because they "will work hard at their relationships and make it work with more base numbers than most," Wilder says. Just "remember to make fun a priority in their connections," she adds.
Number 4 and Numbers 2, 4, and 8Both Marquart and Widler agree that base number 4 is compatible with 2s, 8s, and other 4s. In fact, according to Wilder, the best pairing out of all three is 4s with 8s. "There is often a deep unspoken understanding between 4s and 8s," she says. "This can lead to really loving relationships, but if one of them is going through challenges, they can start attacking the other instead of asking for the support they need."
Number 5 and Numbers 1, 5, 7, and 9The fearless and free-spirited 5s are romantically aligned with numbers 1, 5, 7, and 9. 5s can be too adventurous and unpredictable in their relationships—their wanderlust spirit prompts them to act first, and think later. Wilder's advice for this base number: Take it slow. "They can have a tendency to speed through all the stages of a relationship," she says. "Look for the comfortable silence with another person."
Number 6 and Numbers 1, 3, 4, 6, and 9Base number 6 is most compatible with 1, 3, and 9 as life partners. "They are here to love and be loved," Wilder says. "They will attract a lot of close and meaningful relationships and connections, but need to be aware of establishing and keeping clear boundaries so their significant other does not have to worry about the nature of these connections."
Number 7 and Numbers 1, 4, 5, and 7Those with a base number 7 are known to be curious and creative. They're thinkers who are always in pursuit of (more) knowledge. This makes them compatible with 1, 5, and 7, but more specifically 4s, too. Wilder says 4s and 7s are ideal numbers for each other because, "4s and 7s are both radical in their thinking but in very different ways. They need to honor the other's need for freedom. The more grounded their partner is, the more the 7 feels free to soar, daydream, and create."
Number 8 and Numbers 4, 5, 6, and 8"8s are attracted to the lightness and quickness of others, yet have trouble inviting people all the way inside," Wilder says. Their one true pairings are usually numbers 4, 6, and 8; however, 8s also get along with number 5.
Number 9 and Numbers 1, 2, 3, 6, 7, and 9When it comes to life partners, 9s vibe best with people with base numbers 1, 2, 3, and 6. Whatever the numerology compatibility, Wilder advises this number to work on their triggers because "9s tend to suddenly make enemies of very close or amicable relationships when something in their worldview gets triggered," she explains. "They should focus on finding common ground and keeping the lines of communication open."

What numbers are incompatible Number 1 and Numbers 4, 6Marquardt says number 1 typically struggles with 4s and 6s. 4's rigidness and by-the-book attitude might be too much for a 1 to handle. Wilder adds that 6s and 8s aren't a match for 1s and the latter will struggle to understand a 6's and 8's approach to romantic relationships, so it may not last even if the attraction is there.
Number 2 and Numbers 5 and 7The base number 2 is the sensitive one of the bunch. They're empathetic and caring but can be too reserved and a tad bit immature. As a result, they don't ~vibe~ with numbers like 5 who are feisty daredevils, and 7s who aren't super trusting when it comes to matters of the heart.
Number 3 and Numbers 4, 7, and 8Marquardt notes that number 3 isn't particularly too happy coupled up with 4s, 7s, and 8s. Why? Well, 3s are known to be creative and eccentric balls of energy. (You might liken them to Dory in Finding Nemo). 4s, 7s, and 8s might struggle with 3s lack of concentration and spontaneity.
Number 4 and Numbers 3 and 54s can struggle with number 3, and, because of their reliable, hard-working, and responsible nature. Both 3s and 5s are spontaneous people who might balk at 4's stern attitude.
Number 5 and Numbers 2, 4, and 6According to Marquardt, number five is traditionally incompatible with 2s, 4s, and 6s. As we mentioned before, 5s are impulsive and fearless. They go go go. This mindset can chafe against the structured personality of 2, 4, and 6.
Number 6 and Numbers 5 and 7While a 6 isn't as by-the-book as say, a 4, they still value responsibility and organization above anything else. This, as a result, makes them fundamentally incompatible with numbers like 5 and 7. We know that 5s are too flighty for 6s but 7s seem like a good match for a 6 (in theory). However, it's also important to consider that 6s are nurturing beings looking for emotional connection, whereas 7s favor intellectual partnerships. Could these two work? Possibly, but only if communication prevails.
Number 7 and Numbers 2, 3, 6, 8We know 7s aren't compatible with 6s but they're also mismatched with 2s, 3s, and 8s. As we previously stated, 7s don't mesh well with the sensitive 2s. The 3s can be too impromptu for a 7 who needs groundedness and stability. As for the 8s, their tendency to value abundance, riches, and power might clash with the knowledge-seeking 7.
Number 8 and Numbers 1, 3, 7, 9Number 8 and numbers 1, 3, 7, and 9 aren't known to be uber compatible. 8s and 1s don't get along specifically because of each number's ambition. "Number 8 is also goal-oriented and confident, but it may view number 1 as an enemy number because number 8 has a fear of losing power and status," says Marquardt. "Number 8 can get paranoid around number 1's ability to steal the spotlight or come out on top."
Number 9 and Numbers 4 and 8While 2 is the most sensitive number, number 9 comes in at a close second. This base number is idealistic and kind—they crave love and emotional intimacy—all traits that make them incompatible with numbers 4 and 8 because they don't value the same type of romanticism.
What are enemy numbers in numerology?According to Marquart, "Enemy numbers are considered to be the numbers that are incompatible or challenging with your own numbers, especially your life path number, destiny number, and birthday number." He adds that while there are no universally agreed upon enemy numbers, there are pairs who bring about friction, miscommunication, and negative energy. Perhaps, the most famous enemy pairing is 1 and 8. These two are like oil and water—both have similar traits but find themselves in competition with one another. You can expect no harmony between these two, according to Marquart.
Can numerology predict love?Yep, not only can your life path number shed insight into your love life but so can your personal year and personal month numbers too. Just an FYI, these two numbers are a bit mathematically challenging, so we recommend hopping over to a numerology calculator to correctly calculate each one. While these two numbers won't tell you exactly when love comes, they can be "used to predict when you'll enter specific periods of time where love might be more available to you," Marquardt says. "Just because the numbers for your personal year or month may not be directly related to love doesn't mean you can't find it during that time—it just may be more complicated to navigate."
So, calculating your numerology compatibility with someone is easier than you think and has the potential to reveal a lot about your romantic and platonic matches. Of course, no numerology calculator is 100 percent accurate and it's up to you to decide whether another person is the right fit for you. If you do decide to ask for their birthday and play around with some numbers, though, remember that all numerology numbers are compatible in one way or another, which means just about anyone could be your numerology soulmate.
