While Western astrology is detailed, Chinese astrology is even more complex and nuanced, incorporating not just the 12 Chinese astrology signs but also the five Chinese zodiac elements—earth, metal, water, wood, and fire—and yin and yang energy. But let's begin with the basics: What are the 12 Chinese astrology signs, how did they come to be, and what do they mean for your personality? What is the Chinese zodiac?The Chinese zodiac, also known as Shengxiao ("born resembling"), is a repeating cycle of 12 years, and each year is represented by a different animal. In order, the 12 animals are Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, and Pig. The order of the Chinese astrology signs is related to the most commonly accepted legend of the Chinese zodiac: the Jade Emperor's Race. As the story goes, the Chinese emperor held a race to determine which lucky animals would have the honor of being added to the calendar. What is my Chinese astrology sign, and what does it mean?Juleen (Zhuqing) Wang, Student Services Advisor for Montclair State University's School of Business, grew up in Hangzhou, China. She loves to share Chinese culture and history with her students, and she also sometimes teaches Chinese language classes. As a native of China, she and her family always clung to the superstition of the Chinese zodiac. "Nowadays," she says, "[fewer] people care about it, but it's still in people's minds." For example, zodiac traits and compatibility are often cited as reasons for why two people don't get along. ("They're a Tiger and an Ox—of course they're fighting!")
While that may sound a lot like Western astrology, Wang notes that the very natures of Western and Eastern astrology are inherently different. "In Western astrology, horoscopes change," she explains. "Chinese astrology is pretty set in stone." Unlike Western astrology, which is governed by the constant planetary movements, Chinese astrology is predetermined by birth year; an Ox is an Ox, and that never changes (though the personality of a Water Ox will be somewhat different from a Fire Ox's). The Chinese animal zodiac is a rotating cycle of 12 animals, a different one for each year. These recurring animals represent a concept of time, traditionally used for dating the years in China. The Chinese Lunar Calendar is based on the cycle of the moon, somewhat different to the Western solar calendar, with the beginning of the Chinese year falling somewhere between the Western's late January and early February. Although China adopted the Western calendar in 1911, they still celebrate the Chinese New Year, giving them a double celebration. Most Chinese calendars have the dates for both the Western and the Chinese New Year printed on them.
Not only is the Chinese New Year celebrated on a different date from the Western New Year, but because it is based on the movement of the moon, it also falls on a different date each year. Thus, those born between late January and early February may find their birth year falls in different a year between the Western New Year and the Chinese New Year.
Order of Animals LegendAccording to one Chinese legend the order of the animals was decided in a race across a river, after the animals argued over which should be first, second, third etc in the cycle. They agreed to ask their Gods to decide and to abide by their decision. The gods decreed that the animals would race across a river, and that their position in the cycle would be set by their place in the race.
On the day of the race, the 12 animals gathered on the riverbank. As the race began the rat jumped onto the ox's back, the ox did not notice this, and just as the ox reached the other side of the riverbank, the rat jumped off its back, and won the race. This is why the rat is first, the ox second, and the last animal in the race, the boar, is last in the cycle. And so the rotating cycle of 12 animals used traditionally for naming the years in China was established, with each animal year repeated every 12 years.
